Three Sessional Instructor Positions, 2015/16 Centre for Global Studies, Huron University College, London, Ontario

The Centre for Global Studies invites applications for the following three Sessional Instructor positions it seeks to fill for the 2015/16 academic year:
– Global Cartographies/Chronographies
– Global Inequalities
– Global Power and Insecurities
The teaching load for each of these positions is 3/3, where the Instructor would teach three undergraduate courses in the fall term (September – December 2015) and three undergraduate courses in the winter term (January – April 2016). Applicants may apply for more than one of these three positions with a single application. However, applicants must indicate precisely for which of the position(s) s/he wishes to be considered and make a case for how it is that her/his application should be considered for each of the positions for which s/he wishes to apply. These teaching positions are described as follows:

Global Cartographies/Chronographies
The Instructor in this position will be invited to teach a range of undergraduate courses variously concerned with the production of the world and worlds in terms of spaces and places, along with examinations of time and the human and non-human movements that condition and challenge the formations of place/space. Persons applying for this position should be prepared to teach courses that situate questions of place, space, movement, and time in relation to issues of culture, identity, mobilities, ontology, materials, and law. The ability to teach a course in studies of human displacement would be an asset. Also, the successful applicant may be required to teach one course regarding historical social/political mapping of the Middle East. Expertise in Middle East Studies is not required. Rather, the ability to mobilise critical geography approaches through the example of the Middle East is the required focus.

Global Inequalities
The instructor in this position will be invited to teach a range of undergraduate courses that engage critically with social and material inequalities on global scales, formed historically and conditioned by recent attempts to deploy and challenge projects of development, from state governments, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, social movements, and communities targeted by development projects. Persons applying for this position should be prepared to teach core courses that critically engage the field of Global Development and the problems and sites of contest around which it is formed. Also, it is hoped that the successful applicant will be able to teach courses that specifically give focus to: global inequalities based on sexual differences; the overcoming of management paradigms in global development; and the economics of global development. The ability to teach a course that gives a critical reading on global capitalism would be an asset.

Global Power and Insecurities
The instructor in this position will be invited to teach a range of undergraduate courses that address power dynamics of contemporary globalization, examining how scales of the ‘local’ and the ‘global’ interact in relations of integration, change, security, and mobility. Applicants should be prepared to teach core courses regarding globalization and courses that address problems of global power relations, community, dynamics of securitization, social and bodily affect, and forms of resistance that arise under contemporary relations of globalization. The successful applicant may be required to teach one course that studies forms of power, insecurities, and mobility in the Middle East. Expertise in Middle East Studies is not required. Rather, the ability to generate an analysis of power relations in globalization through the example of the Middle East is the required focus.

The successful applicant for each of these three positions will hold a PhD from or be very close to completing her/his PhD in any disciplinary or interdisciplinary context across the social sciences and humanities. Applicants should be aware that the Centre for Global Studies does not seek to define or conserve a disciplined understanding of Global Studies per se but, rather, proposes the Centre as an open site of critical intellectual and scholarly contest in mutual information. The Centre for Global Studies is an interdisciplinary site of learning and research, promoting critical inquiry into how we may effectively and responsibly engage the world. The Centre offers degree modules in three streams of interrelated learning: Globalization Studies, Global Culture Studies, and Global Development Studies, each promoting and embracing the interplay of inquiries generated across the humanities and social sciences. For further information, please refer to the Centre’s institutional webpage at: http://www.huronuc.on.ca/Academics/FacultyofArtsandSocialScience/CentreforGlobalStudies

We take our students seriously and treat them with the respect deserved by persons who are seeking rich events in learning and intellectual, personal, and social challenge. Commitment to a high level of thoughtful pedagogical engagement is requisite for these positions.

Each applicant for these positions should prepare and submit the following application materials: a letter of application in which the applicant describes her/his expertise and experiences, in relation to the sessional position(s) for which s/he is applying, in terms of academic preparation, research, and teaching experience; a teaching dossier, which should include a statement of teaching philosophy in which the applicant provides examples of how s/he could draw on her/his research in formulating and teaching courses pertinent to the sessional position(s) for which s/he is applying; a current curriculum vitae; three letters of reference (sent independently by the applicant’s referees); and a writing sample, of article length. The deadline for submission of these application materials is March 11th, 2015. It is strongly preferred that all application materials and letters of reference should be sent in paper form to: Ms. Julie Bennett, Centre for Global Studies – Sessional Instructors Search, Huron University College, 1349 Western Road, London, Ontario, N6G 1H3 Canada.
