Polyglot Manifesto

This group investigates theories and practices of multi-/plurilingualism in the arts. Discussions of the work by key critics, for example Bakhtin, Glissant, Sommer, Derrida, Yildiz, Dowling, Kellman, Walkowitz, Gramling, Niaz, and Sollors, support our understanding of art that represents more than a single language. Comparative studies involving artists such as Zeina Hashem Beck, Julia Alvarez, Ana Lydia Vega, Patrice Desbiens, Fatih Akin or Humaid Alsuwaidi illustrate the ways in which multilingual art may challenge the status of English, interrogate the idea of national languages, contribute to revivalistics, or reflect on multilingual realities in general. Questions which guide our collaborations relate to the following focus points:

• The role of technology with regard to polyglot art
• Benefits of interdisciplinary work in the context of multilingualism
• Representations of vernacular in storytelling
• Differences based on choices of genre
• Plurilingual practices and policies in different parts of the world
• Aesthetic and political implications of trans-lingual storytelling
• Multilingual art past and present
• Motivations for code-switching in creative expression

Ce groupe étudie les théories et les pratiques artistiques multi-/plurilingues. Le travail de critiques clés comme Bakhtine, Glissant, Sommer, Derrida, Yildiz, Dowling, Kellman, Walkowitz, Gramling, Niaz et Sollors nourrit notre compréhension d’œuvres qui mettent en scène plus d’une langue. Les études comparatives d’œuvres d’artistes comme Zeine Hashem Beck, Julia Alvarez, Ana Lydia Vega, Patrice Desbiens, Fatih Akin ou Humaid Alsuwaidi illustrent la façon dont l’art multilingue met au défi le statut de l’anglais et du français, interroge le concept de langue nationale, contribue au revivalisme ou réfléchit aux réalités multilingues en général. Les questions qui guident nos collaborations se rapportent aux aspects suivants :
