Abstract
We cannot fully understand either Evelyn Lau or Wu He without reference to certain aspects of Chinese traditional culture as they are played out in the context of the family and the individual psychology, in particular the image of the father...the psychological relationship to the father and...the hypocrisies and contradictions of patriarchal society are inextricably linked...it is in the image of the father, as understood from the perspective of Western psychology as well as traditional Chinese cultural models, that Evelyn Lau's and Wu He's engagement with the social order both find their most important disconnection and which consequently lays the basis for their critique of that order.
