Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Digital Humanities and Social Justice

The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies seeks to appoint a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Digital Humanities and Social Justice. The successful candidate will be a senior academic at the level of Professor with an outstanding international reputation as a research leader, responsible for furthering scholarly intensification at York, and attracting and cultivating a cohort of collegial and student intellectual endeavour in the field and exploring interactions across disciplines. S/he will be a world-class scholar in the study of digital media, communities, and/or cultures as they impact, emerge out of, or respond to questions of social justice. With a dynamic, substantial and ongoing record of scholarship supported through competitive external funding, the candidate will support York’s strategic prioritization of interdisciplinary and intermedial research that forges a just and sustainable world. Research may focus on but not be limited to intelligent, interactive, mobile, social, or networked technologies; digital methodologies, cultures, modes of perception, or expression; and/or the ethical and intellectual consequences of living in and with the world’s technological conditions, locally, globally, today, and/or across time. The successful candidate’s research will address key critical and theoretical intersections of digital humanities and social justice and the modalities for understanding these intersections from a contemporary or historical perspective. Ultimately housed in the Departments of English, History and/or Humanities, the appointed scholar will foster international collaboration, pedagogy, and public access to research in digital humanities and social justice.


The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field, and will:

• be recognized as an outstanding and innovative world-class research leader whose accomplishments have made a major international impact in the field;

• have a superior record of obtaining competitive external research funding and attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows;

• as chairholder, be expected to develop collaborative programs of research involving faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows from across the entire University and, where appropriate, from outside York University; and

• be proposing an original, innovative research program of the highest quality.


The Canada Research Chairs program stands at the centre of a national strategy to make Canada one of the world’s top countries in research and development. In 2000, the Government of Canada created a permanent program to establish 2,000 research professorships – Canada Research Chairs – in eligible degree-granting institutions across the country.

An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver. Perrett Laver will support the University in helping to identify the widest possible field of qualified candidates and assisting in the assessment of candidates against the requirements for the role.

Applications should consist of:

• a signed letter of application, describing how the applicant meets the criteria for the position;

• a full, up-to-date curriculum vitae (including full academic training and employment history);

• a comprehensive CRC vision statement of no more than 10 pages, including:

  • a specific, personal research plan, and

  • a statement of research leadership, including mentoring faculty and graduate students; a plan for developing or fostering research intensification across boundaries and/or disciplinary strengths; and a plan for the development of externally funded large-scale strategic research projects and/or other programs appropriate to the field.

• copies of the applicant’s three most influential publications; and

• a list of three referees who may be contacted later in the process with the candidate’s permission.

Applications will be considered by the selection committee thereafter, and selected candidates will subsequently be invited for informal engagements with the University by late July 2015; more formal interviews of short-listed candidates will follow in September 2015. Selection of and negotiations with the preferred candidate will take place thereafter and it is intended that the appointee will take up employment in alignment with the CRC appointment process.

The anticipated start date of the tenure stream position is July 1, 2016. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
