Stealing the Image

We are dedicating a special issue of Imaginations to examine the shifting notions of ownership. What does it say about our contemporary notions of art when an artist is sued for stealing a news photo or when the iconic image of Ernesto “Che” Guevara is used in an advertising campaign? When does the appropriation of images shift from intertextuality or pastiche to theft? Too often, discussions of artistic creation and ownership revolve around legalistic notions of intellectual property. As cultural critics, we call on contributors to discuss aesthetic and political ramifications of stealing, appropriating, and quoting. We welcome contributions from a variety of fields, but especially those that cross disciplinary and national boundaries. We would be interested in receiving academic and non-traditional essays. If you wish to conduct an interview with an artist whose work you feel corresponds to the special issue or if you would be interested in writing a review essay, please contact us.

Imaginations: Journal of Cross-Cultural Image Studies is a forum for timely and thought-provoking work on topics in cross-cultural image studies. The journal brings together multidisciplinary work on the image as it is contextualized, problematized, and reinvented at the crossroads of different cultural and linguistic envisionings. Imaginations is a nexus, or aggregate point, where excellent scholarship informed by different cultures, national histories and linguistic traditions will ultimately create a new vocabulary for addressing the notion of the image along with its embodiments, and where academic research can also come into contact with visual artists reflecting on their approaches. The interdisciplinary and cross-cultural contacts will inspire new dialogues and parallelisms, or even differences and potential frictions, out of which shall necessarily emerge unforeseen insights into the role of the image in the 21st century.

Imaginations will debut Fall 2010: http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/imaginations
